Coffee and Food Culture Week to kick off in Guangzhou

UPDATED :2025-04-23

From April 24 to 29 , the 2025 Liwan Coffee and Food Culture Week will be held at Shangxiajiu Plaza in Liwan district, where everything from coffee beans to drip bag coffee will be available to meet the needs of coffee lovers.

Guangzhou has a long history of coffee, and Liwan's connection with coffee can be traced back to the mid-19th century. In 1836, Danish merchant Peter Ostrovsky opened the "North Wind & Sea" cafe at the Thirteen Hongs in Liwan district, which was not only the first coffee shop in Guangzhou, but also the first in China.

In recent years, several trendy coffee hubs have sprung up in Liwan, such as Shamian (沙面), Yongqingfang (永慶坊), Lychee Bay and Xiaomei Street (小梅大街), attracting countless young people.

At the Coffee and Food Culture Week, visitors can sample speciality coffee from around the world, including those made from beans of Starbucks, international brands, and estates in Yunnan province.

The event invites estates in Menglian (孟連) county — the "First County of Specialty Coffee" in China — to showcase their beans. Yunnan province is China's main coffee-growing region, and Menglian county in Pu'er city is widely recognized as one of the world's most ideal places to grow coffee, known as the "Paradise of Arabica".

Visitors to the event will also be able to relish delicious food from Guangzhou's intangible cultural heritage list, as well as to purchase cultural creative products and themed merchandise. It is sure to be a catering feast for people who love coffee and food.
