An art exhibition themed When History Meows, a comic created by Fei Zhi, a popular cartoonist and his team, is underway in Guangdong Cultural Center, Guangzhou's Tianhe district.
Based on Chinese culture, the strip cartoon series were adapted from the Twenty-Four Histories, official records spanning from around 3000 B.C. to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Featuring 12 cartoon cat characters, the comic presents the history in a witty and vivid way, which has made it perform well on general lists of best-selling books. And the homonymous animation also garnered extensive good reviews on the Chinese video platform Bilibili.
Through the narrative of 12 anthropomorphic cats, the exhibition seeks to answer a number of history-related questions. For example, who constituted the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors era in Chinese mythology? How was the Xia Dynasty (2100-1600 B.C.) set up?
Also presented by cartoon cats are intangible cultural heritages of Lingnan region, such as Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu (蔡李佛拳), lion dance and Wing Chun, one of the traditional southern fists styles.
Meanwhile, there is an exhibition area for visitors to learn about fun facts, which refer to rice, lychee, Cantonese morning tea and white sliced chicken, etc..
Moreover, a reading section and a display area for themed merchandise can be found on site. And block-building competition, comics experience sessions as well as movie-watching activities are prepared for visitors.
